Why the hell do they still abuse the poor rodent? Did they ever explain what gives Phil his seemingly divine insight? Why would a groundhog be able to predict the weather. If he is under ground so much, how does he have such an avid interest in climatology? I think we should put our faith in a much more reliable source ---like dolphins or pigs.
EDIT: I used to have a pig named Pumba (*like in the Lion King) that would create a den, or large nest days before a front would arive. When a tropical cyclone threatened, the pig would act all weird and change its eating habits.
I think that she was more accurate than the official forcast were. :)

Chill dude...they don't abuse me! Only James can do that.

now, do they determine what phil sees based upon the actual weather at the time, or do they simply flip a coin and hope that no one is keeping track?
edit: or is phil the real deal? :)

Go rent groundhog day!
Actually, there are about 50 billion members of the press and some dude dressed up like some 19th Century Victorian sideshow freak with a huge top hat wakes me out of a nice slumber, drags my *** out of my comfy burrow, and holds me up for all to see. I always see my shadow because all those 50 billion press have huge spotlights which nearly cause me to go blind. They hold some stupid ceremony and then unceremoniously drop me back in my hole where they don't give a shit about me for 364 more days of the year. But that's also good, where else in America can you get paid for a full year for one day's worth of work? I get full benefits, plus dental, and with my teeth, boy do I make out on that deal.
And to answer your question, they use an 8-ball, not a coin flip, but shhhhhhh, you didn't hear me tell you that!

Everything makes sense now. To think that I was about to suggest we kill Phil and see what images we can make out of his guts when we put them in a frying pan ---just like how the Gauls used to predict weather!

I wonder if a voting republican is more likely to stay home during a hurricane than a voting democrat and vice versa.

I could go into an entire diatribe on the GOTV (Get Out The Vote) issue (I work for a State Senator in NY), but I'm tired. Suffice it to say that no matter what your party affiliation, the more devoted to a candidate one is, the more effort one puts into getting to the polls. I found it interesting that more registered voters (70+%) voted in Iraq than voted in the 2004 Presidential Election. At least the voters in Florida got it right...can't say the same for my state, which elected a carpetbagger for one of our US Senate seats. Red states RULE!
