I do know a bit about File Transfer Protocol, slappy, but I have no idea what format your video is in nor how Mike's server would host it. I hate to give a plug to Jarcher, but why don't you go to www.majorgeeks.com (http://www.majorgeeks.com) and see if he can help you.

Man, I am so glad you are here. I have my hurricane charley movie ready for the internet. I contact mikeC and he gives me this message:
If you are familiar with ftp login to flhurricane.com

Upload files to the public_html folder and they will show up as part of http://flhurricane.com/mcelroy
The server is mine, feel free to upload as much as you want related to the essay, no space limits.
Problem is, I have no idea how an ftp server works, what software to download, how to use it, ect. I pm'd him asking for directions, but he seems to be away at the extended moment (about two weeks). I need someone to tutor me from the ground up.

I understand the basic concept of what I am trying to do, but I don't want to do anything wrong. All I need to do is load seven movies using the information provided above ---and yes, no space limits.

good
what I would do
is to completly disable the windows firewall and install a firewall
Norton just sux and the windows firewall does "leak" a bit
remember that most computers purchased factory ***. usually have Norton Firewall already installed
and anything about Norton is time consumingy to completly remove
the uninstaller doesn't get rid of anything
you will have to go through the reg to remove anything
I would recomend
Sygate Personal Firewall Free (http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3356)
or if you are willing to pay
Sygate Personal Firewall Pro (http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1558)
you can monitor and block or allow what you want
either all the time or each time you use it
it may take a few minutes to config, but well worth it. . .
so after you have typed in all the info and connected. .how far did you get?
Jeffery McElroy

I just want one full length one. Go to the post office (or office supplies store). They sell DVD mailers. If you don't have a "box", one of those mailers that netflix sends dvds is would suffice. Couldn't be more than a buck or two.

you can
e mail large fils be archiving them in to a few self extracting files
hell you can eve IM them. . . .

then use something like Winace to do it
why can't you upload it to a server?

Jarcher, would downloading the file via ftp take a while? What are the transfer speeds like?

I don't have any 'extreme' weather footage. It is merely the story of one family, among thousands, who rode out the worst storm to hit the US since hurricane Andrew. You will see the horrible monster that is charley through the shattered glass of our front door. The p.o.v is very small, but it is viewing something unimaginably big. Keep your mind open, and accept the film for what it is.

While the good people of Pensacola might disagree with you, I am not making light of what you and your family went thru. I'm trying to have a little fun and obviously you're not taking it that way so I'll stop busting on you.
Had you been a member of CFHC 48 hours before Charley struck, you would have seen how I called for that horrific monster to reach CAT IV status before anyone, including NHC, was ready to make the call. Of course, I had a little coaching from Mr. Ed Dunham, our resident met god...no one in SW FL was prepared, but I'd like to think the 2,000+ members of CFHC at least had some time to prepare when all "official" sources were calling for a CAT II at best.
Have a nice evening.:icon_evil
Jeffery McElroy
03-07-2005, 08:31 PM
Yeah, I recently read back over the archived stuff for last your and saw how you made the call. I was making a generalization about my film. I spent over six months working on it, and it just means so much to me. To hear rude comments like the ones you were making somewhat hurt my feelings. And I am really a touchy feely kind of guy. Your last post was well taken, but let us remember what we are dealing with here. What I have composed represents to me all of the tropical cyclones that anyone has ever been through in the history of the planet. It is that important to me. I was talking to my Japanese teacher today, and he and I are the only people at our school who can claim that we have lived through a Cat V. This guys wife lived in Okinawa most of her life. Don't they get hit like every year? It is so universal.
EDIT: Why would the people of Pensacola disagree with me? Opal?

Actually Irene was perhapes my least favorite hurricane, and she was only a cat 1.
LI Phil
03-07-2005, 08:52 PM
As you know Ivan was a Catagory III. I suppose it depends on your definition of 'worst'.
While Ivan was a strong CAT III (5 mph more would have made him a IV) at landfall (mercifully), his surge was that of a V. The most destructive and deadly part of a hurricane is the surge. I believe storm surge was over 30' at Pensacola...the I-10 bridge certainly argues for that.
Big difference: Charley was a STRENGTHENING hurricane at landfall, whereas Ivan, Jeanne & Frances all were weakening...and your area hadn't seen a hurricane of that magnitude in like 100 years. Also, it was the first CAT IV to strike the US mainland since Andrew and very few people were prepared, or at least as prepared as they should have been. In the final 24 hours before landfall, Charley went from Cat II to IV (which I predicted) but still most people were blissfully unaware.
By the time Ivan struck, we'd already been through Charley & Frances and to a lesser degree Gaston, Hermine & Bonnie. Folks were as prepared as they could have been (I hope). So, as far as actual strength of storm and surprise, Charley was much worse. However, Ivan probably inflicted more damage. Either way, it would have sucked to have been in either one. At least Charley struck during daylight.
If you read the boards before and after Charley, I made some very tough decisions regarding moderation, likening the events of Charley, Frances, Ivan & Jeanne not so much to the events of 9-11, but they had the same psychological effect. In fact, somewhere in the archives there's even a "LI Phil" post http://flhurricane.com/cyclone/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=32283&an=0&page=1#32283 (Ed buried it in the Everything & Nothing forum...bastid). It might explain where I'm coming from with these bad boys and why need to inject some humor into an otherwise dangerous and life threatening situation.
Enjoy the read...

We have friends and family in Miami and West Palm Beach, so if a storm threatens any of those areas I will feel compelled to assist my brethren in their time of need. You should see my Uncles Andrew footage. He drove down with his wife and dog from Orlando the night the hurricane was making landfall. In his video, there are 1000's of people jammed up in traffic trying to leave Miami, and his is the only car on the lane heading in.

So having a deathwish runs in the family...I could see your uncle not caring, but to take his wife & dog. Even if he was 'rushing to assist' you and your family, that's just plain crazy! Did he realize how strong Andrew was?
Jeffery McElroy
03-08-2005, 02:36 PM
The strongest hurricane he (and my dad for that matter) had ever been through was Betsy, in 65' I believe. We definitely underestimated Andrews’s power. My grandpa (who had experienced Miami hurricanes during the 30's, 40's, and 50's) called and urged us to leave. I am not sure why my uncle came down --he left the next day! My parents told him to bring extra gas and water, and all he brought was beer. He arrived at the house just as the outer feeder bands were coming on shore. However, I must say that I am thankful. As things were, we would not have survived without his help.
