View Full Version : Yet another hurricane question.

Why did Charley deepen so rapidly? He went from a cat II to a super hurricane five hours before landfall. That’s not cool. And why the hell didn’t the NHC update the media when he was turning. I am looking at the radar and seeing the thing wobble east, and then back at the TV with some quack meteorologist telling everyone that it is going to Tampa. I am all like "shut the hell up you quack"... and alas, Charley destroyed Punta Gorda. Simple observation triumphs once again. It is my understanding that the nhc was not able to fly their p-3's through the storm as it approached landfall. Last night I was talking to an ice freighter captain who worked with people on the Edmund Fitzgerald --This guy new a thing or two about weather. I forget what he said exactly, but he wanted to associate Charley's turn with his rapid intensification. Now, I know that he was being influenced by the same troth that was affecting bonnie, but his precise location in the harbor is staggering. The entire eye fit in the harbor. I remember that day how hot the water was. My dad and I went in it to tie some more ropes on our boat, and we could definitely feel the heat. Since no one really knows, how do you guys explain the intensification? Any theories (no one has really answered this question)... Phil, katie, Jason (..oh yeah)?

Because the NWS and the NHC are basically ordered to use only the GFS model for their predictions...too much politics involved to explain it fully here...had you been a member of CFHC at the time you would have known more than 24 hours it was going to be BAAAAADDDDD. I'm privvy to a little birdy who tips me off when things are going to be bad in a certain area. I'll be sure to pass that info along if you are under the bullseye. Regardless, if you stay on my site, you'll never get caught off guard again.

As far as the rapid intensification, Ed Dunham explains it in detail somewhere on CFHC...just search his posts and you'll find it somewhere. Jason Kelley could also help you out.

I was under the impression that no one knew why. Irregardless, we were not caught of guard (believe it or not, Andrew taught us somthing). Needless to say a couple thousand people were though.

Irregardless is not a word. I did not say you were caught off guard. I'd like to think CFHC saved at least one life before, during and after Charley. SW Florida hadn't seen anything like him for more than 40 years, so most residents (excluding the Homestead Ex-pats) probably had no idea what was coming their way. Plus, it was the FIRST of four majors (I say Frances was a CAT III at landfall, despite phucking NHC) to strike (yes Ivan did not landfall in FL, but he gave CAT III winds to the panhandle) Florida. After Charley, everyone became a bit more aware of the awesome forces of nature.

Of course, those who've tracked these things as a hobby for years weren't caught unprepared, but most Floridians were. Even with one of the largest peacetime evac's ever ordered, most people were blissfully unaware of what awaited them.

I'd say it was more like a couple hundred thousand...

Jeffery - I tuned in to local TV stations (which aren't normally any better) instead of NHC because they seem to be more aware of what is hanging right off the coast. They were getting new models in every so many minutes and releasing the information to the public. CFHC absoultely had even better models than the local stations did but, I didn't even find out about it till after Charley. One of the radio stations in Orlando told us about it. I wish I would have had it before Charley. It was a very intersting storm and like Ivan one to be studied more even after the fact. I found it so interesting that until like the hour it acually hit they were still calling Tampa as it's target and well, as we all know, it came in south at your home town. We watched him wobbled back and forth and cut his path of distruction up until 30 minutes before he hit us and the power went out. I remember the tremendous headache I had the hour before his arrival. It was something I won't forget. It lasted until well after he left. Strange. Mother Nature sure can create some creative scenes on our earth as well as frightening ones.

Why, yes dear - I did. I in fact, forwarded your site to every person I knew during hurricane season if just for them to get the facts. Even random people at the bank. Realizing that my county had already gone through two hurricanes and one more on the way - I felt they should know. The graphics from Mosquito (or whatever it is) were just AWESOME and dead on!

As gay as it might sound, it's not. When you have the device in you and your mate is tickling your taint and .....well consuming the snake... there is nothing better...

It also works well with the opposite sex when the male is vacuuming the carpet...

You know, I really don't appreciate this. I was thrilled when I came on this morning to find that this thread had received over three pages of response. Imagine my disappointment, eh?
Phil, I have always been fascinated by all weather and hurricanes in particular. After Charley my interest underwent, forgive the pun, an explosive deepening. Every time I talk to you about Charley I get the impression that you think I am ignorant on the matter. Ever since Jason left I feel that I have been (unwillingly) filling the role of whiny high school student, in which I have become the object of immaturity and (on your part) belittlement. Now, looking back at my initial post, I realize I was a bit punch drunk at the time from writing all day Saturday. I wasn't asking about explosive deepening in general, only how it applied in Charley's case. As a strengthening super hurricane Charley was going through a hell of a lot of energy. Now, that power has to come from somewhere. Nothing to our knowledge was going on below him to mark such a dramatic increase in energy consumption. Where the hell did he get the energy to maintain such velocity?

Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.

meh, it is a word.
