ok I am back. What is the problem Phil?

LI Phil
03-14-2005, 08:16 PM
The problem is that I'm either a ****tard or it's hopeless...probably both.

I cannot run your video no matter what I do. I get an error message that I need to be running Windows NT, which I do not have (I have 98...either that or ME, but I think 98). The file was definitely downloaded, at first I couldn't find it, but when I did nada.

That was when I did the right click save target as

then I just tried to open the file which defaulted me to winamp, but nothing.

I'm at wits end. You may just have to mail me the DVD...

Jeffery McElroy
03-14-2005, 08:20 PM
You have window's media player right?

Jeffery McElroy
03-14-2005, 08:24 PM
You said it was tying to open it in winamp? Right click on the file, go to "open with" and choose windows media player.

LI Phil
03-14-2005, 08:30 PM
OK, I don't know what the phuck is going on. I was able to download (save, not open) and watch Part II, but the video and audio were all choppy. I'm going to try to play it again, sometimes the first time thru things don't run smoothly.

I'm assuming that both the video and audio run "smoothly" and this is not a malfunction on your end. I will let you know shortly if I am successful.

BTW your mom is hot!

Jeffery McElroy

The full version download doesn't work? You need to see that one. Save it to your desktop, and download or update windows media player.

LI Phil
03-14-2005, 08:33 PM
It's still all choppy and shit...Obviously I can download and view it, but why isn't is smooth-flowing? This has to be an error on my end...

This is driving me frikkin nuts!:icon_evil

Jeffery McElroy
03-14-2005, 08:35 PM
There are some interlacing errors that happened when I compressed the file. It should be smooth, but the video will be low quality. The quality of the full version, while by no means perfect, is a bit better. You have windows media player right? What are you playing it in?

jarcher
03-14-2005, 08:36 PM
I was able to direct DL part one
remember me saying somethong about the guy in the hat?

I deleted it

I am at 44% its been 12 min. . .

you may just have to re DL part one phil
it sounds like its not your PC or the program
part three is compressed

Jeffery McElroy

I may need to update winamp, but something is still phucked up...also, the place I put the "giant" file (the main one obviously) isn't showing up...

let me try updating winamp and see if that helps

That's a rather personal question don't you think...

But since you asked, I'm using astroglide and it shouldn't be long now (actually it is quite long now, but you know what I'm saying)

I updated winamp and I'm now downloading Part V. If this comes (no pun intended) through clean, then I'll re download the whole thing and watch it tomorrow.

Hey jarch, you ever try astroglide? The shit is mint.

And it's not porn that has destroyed my computer, it's the constant "spilling" on the keyboard...<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Could I get you to do some work for me? Not porno work but some of the video of I have of my daughter work? Just curious if you might be willing to do something like that. I also have some Charley and Francis video. Alot of the destruction on the east coast from Francis. But, I have to keep waiting for your file to buffer before I can watch it. I gave the link to some people at another message board and they refused to watch it. One guy had the nerve to tell me that last years active hurricane season "ruined" his Florida vacation, and he didn’t want to watch a movie about it. Another claimed... "I have been through many a hurricane, the worst was Gloria" "It was fun!"

Okay, I finally finished the movie with a ton of interuptions.

I am clapping and over joyed at the quality of your movie. I do have some suggestions.

The parts where you were running back and forth were kind of dizzy to me but that was my opinion. I have no room to talk because my footage of the storms was the same. Running from outside inside, etc. I think you could have chopped it out but I knwo you were trying to capture the excitement in the movie. The music at the end - classic. I thought it went real well especially the last musical peice you had. I really liked how you showed the hurricane out as a whole (from the earth view) because it gave the storm props for his size.

Overall, I think you did a great job. I am honored to have watched it and if you make it available - I would like ot be the first to sign up to buy one.

Jeff - you are talented. I think you need to give yourself a lot more credit than you do. I had tears at the end because I just remember how many people were homeless and displaced after Charley. It was a grim reminder of how frightening these storms can be. A lesson for all. They are exciting but dangerous. I know how many families in Hardee county that lost everything and I know the same goes for your county. It isn't just a home they lost it was their entire history. Thanks for sharing it really.

LI Phil
03-15-2005, 12:23 PM
One day I will see it...

Jeffery McElroy
03-15-2005, 12:45 PM
Wow Katie, I don't know what to say. That was perhaps the best compliment I have ever received in relation to this movie. I would have to agree with you over the running back and forth. I got so wrapped up in the moment that I forgot what I was doing. At one point I wasn’t even looking through the lens, but merely holding the camera up. This was something I wanted to see with my own eyes. As a result there is some very jerky camera movement. Also, I kept trying to set up a shot and then something else would catch my attention. It was too much visual information for me to only focus on one thing, and by the time the power cut out, my mom and dad made me come inside.

The Bug
03-15-2005, 12:49 PM
I know. I had the same problem with my video with both storms too. There was so much going on and you would hear something behind you and jerk around to capture it without pausing the camera first - your's is far better than mine. I was also trying to deal with a one year old during all of it and my 84 year old grandfather. Needless to say it is trying.

Jeffery McElroy
03-15-2005, 01:01 PM
You had to deal with an 85 and 1 year old? Wow. You are a stronger person than I am. That is one element all the storm chasers always miss because they don't have to deal with any loved ones. I don't sympathize with them at all because they put themselves in that situation. Anyway, you should post your video. I have a friend in West Palm Beach who documented Frances and Jeanne. Perhaps we could make one big movie.

EDIT: Did you see the motor home?

LI Phil
03-15-2005, 01:03 PM
One day I will see this video...

The Bug
03-15-2005, 01:11 PM
Yes, but I wasn't sure if it was a motor home or a semi-truck. From on it's side it looked like it could be either.

I would have liked to have had video of Jeanne but we were in Chicago and our flight was cancelled the day of her arrival.

And yes, I don't know who was worse, my granddaddy or my daughter?!? He kept walking out side (he is completely fine and able still drives himself around in his convertible) but I had to keep dragging hi mback in because the gusts were so strong and he weights like 100 lbs. Then, Madison kept trying ot get out on the porch with my while I was video taping. Once the power went out it was dark as hell because I don't think it even hit till around 6:30 p.m. I had to put Madison in her play pen and let her cry because the stress was too much. I culdn't handle worrying about the house, my grandfather and her running around. I needed some kind of peace. Looking back, I shouldn't have done that though she was scared and didn't understand what was going on.

I am building a house now and making sure that there is a center room in the house big enough for us. We shall see how that comes out. It is going to be a storage/safe room more or less. I have so much holiday crap it requires it's own room but that is what it will be used for if needed.

LI Phil
03-15-2005, 01:31 PM
One day I will see Jeff's video...

Jeffery McElroy
03-15-2005, 01:32 PM
Yeah you really need to do that. Even people in the middle of the state are not safe. No part of Florida is more than 70 miles away from the ocean. Considering that a big hurricane can have an eye 50 miles wide and an overall diameter of over 500 miles, no one is really safe. But look on the bright side –the hurricanes will be somewhat weakened by the time they get to you, and you don’t have to worry about surge. For me, it doesn’t matter how strong my house is if it is under 20 feet of water.

I just couldn't get over how fast he was too. Did you notice that? I mean the winds were strong but the stronger winds seem to pass within no time at all. With Frances it seemed like it would never end. It just continued on for what seemed a day or two.

Jeffery McElroy
03-15-2005, 01:51 PM
Phil, check out the eastward component right when it approaches the mouth of the harbor. When he clears the Harbor, he switches direction again and heads north. What do you think of that? Timely wobble, or was something in the harbor attracting him. I wonder if Drivel has anything to say about this :p

http://www.hardcoreweather.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=364&stc=1

EDIT: Katie, what about the sound in my movie. Is that similar to what you heard. Charley, while still formidable, was considerably weaker by the time he got to you. How much different was the noise he made. Did you hear singing like I did?

LI Phil
03-15-2005, 02:01 PM
I wonder if Drivel has anything to say about this :p

Of course stupid, the moon caused it.

As I'm sure you are aware, charley had been trending further and further east than the models were predicting, as they simply could not understand the strength of the trof. You got unlucky because of a rare but not unprecedented monster trof that went deep into the GOM and yanked him up and east. By all rights, Charley should have done basically what Ivan did. Bonnie, being in such close proximity to Charley lost all her punch and I'm certain did affect Charley's strength and direction to a certain extent. Not saying any fujiwara or anything like that. BTW, three days before Charley hit, I was tipped off to the fact that he would become a monster but I was told NOT to go public with that...to wait until 48 hours. Well, after last season, I'm never going to do that again as 72 hours is well within the acceptable time frame for making a call.

As far as the last minute wobble, it was all part of gods grand plan to make you a filmmaker...

Jeffery McElroy
03-15-2005, 02:12 PM
You got tipped off? By who? At the time I figured just from regular observation that the cyclone was not following the rules. Of course, intensity-wise I had no clue as to what was going to happen. I was betting for a sizable cat III. It still amazes me (nhc says he had a deepening rate of 5 mb per hour at landfall, which makes me wonder how far he would have gone had he not hit land). As for the unseasonably strong trough, why didn't the NHC pick up on this? Do they really have their heads stuck that far in the GFS?

EDIT: As you can see from the radar reflectivity in this image, the eastern quadrants were a lot wetter.

The Bug
03-15-2005, 02:37 PM
Yes, I heard sounds I didn't even know were possible. I dont' remember hearing such sounds with Andrew. I was home alone when he came through. My parents were stuck in the Virgin Islands at the time. I had a party so maybe that was why I don't remember the sounds. We weren't in his path either but still had a lot of wind and damage. Well, my dad's nursery wsa completely ruined by a tornado. Anyway, we had a lot of howlling with Charley. Didn't notice it much with Frances either. Funny. Now that you mention it.

I cannot reveal my source because I was asked not to do so. To have violated that trust would have not only been wrong, but I would have lost that person as a source. Lets just say that this person has been a professional met for 50 years and he is entrusted with an extremely important job in the private sector. If I get a heads up again, I will again keep my source secret, but I've gotten very good at forecasting these things on my own. You really need to join accuweather-pro...at least from June thru November 30th.

BTW, as much as I bash the NHC, and I do, they still do a pretty good job. Their problem is an overreliance of the GFS (basically they are told, by their employer, Uncle Sam, that they are to follow the GFS to the letter). However, the individual forecasters, Stacey Stewart being the best, do excellent tropical discussions that indicate they are looking at all the models and will hint at what they are saying. However, the official NHC forecast is extremely regimented. The tropical models usually have a much better handle on the threat potential than the globals anyway...the SHIFOR, SHIPS & GFDL are particularly useful.

Oh, NHC knew about the trof...it's just that the models didn't initialize it very well and when you have seven models 2 days out showing Tampa and north all the way to the panhandle, you don't call Punta Gorda. Even I was north, though by less than 100 miles at 48 hours.

I have actually, 2 secret sources, the second of whom is about to grad with a major in meterology (so he's already a met) who has access to the FSU superensemble output, and he aids me in my forecasting as well. The FSU performed the best last year as it has in years past...

Last year was The Season From Hell (I trademarked that phrase) so if you see someone refer to TSFH [tm LI Phil] you'll understand what they are referring to.

Are you gonna send me that DVD?

Jeffery McElroy
03-15-2005, 02:42 PM
You went through Andrew too? Heh, you got the beat up version of everything that slammed into me. Andrew never lost major hurricane strength during his little jog through our state though, so everyone went through hell. For us though, it was the most extreme thing that we will proabably ever see. A buddy of my dad was clocking wind gusts upwards of 200mph. I don't really believe that, as I don't think his anemometer would survive, but I wouldn't be suprised if it got up past 180 or 190. I lived near Biscayne Bay at the time.

Yeah. I used Ivan's eye. At the time, my house sided to the right of our boat (look to the bottom center) in the middle canal. Now we live on the same street, 2nd to last house. There are two canals to our left, and then open harbor.
We still own our other house, and to tell you the truth I would rather stay there during a hurricane. The one we are in now had portions of the roof blown off. That would be cool video from the inside though.

Having, of course, never been through the eye of a hurricane, at first your photoshop graphic looked a bit odd...big huge storm over your house, but your house in the sunlight. Then, duh, it dawned on me. That's what you get during the eye (assuming it is daylight).

As far as going through one...I should probably couch my answer slightly, as James (from England, not rollie) once asked me this. As a property owner, I would not want to have to go thru anything worse than a CAT I (I told you, Gloria left us without power for a week). However, I might be more inclined to witness nature at her worst from a secure hotel room where I wouldn't have to worry about any real personal loss. The thought of having trees blown on my house (well I live in a condo now but I did own a house) or on my car is not a thought I relish.

When I was about 11 years old, (so 1977 or so - I could look up the storm) a ts blew through in the early morning hours and at the time we had two huge willow trees in our back yard. Well, one of them fell between my house and my neighbors house (the trees were about 80 feet tall). My bedroom faced the trees and I was asleep. I could have been killed if the tree had fallen ten feet from where it did. That really got me interested in canes.

OK, I just looked up the storm. It was 1976 and the storm was Belle.

I'm at 40.7N 73.6W, so she pretty much passed over my house sometime between 16 & 17 on the chart. So I guess you could count belle up there with Gloria, but she came through at night and I really don't remember it all that well. But I do remember that tree coming down and my dad screaming (which woke me up) IT'S COMING DOWN IT'S COMING DOWN.

We had the remaining Willow chopped down when they removed the debris from the first. I remember crying because I had a really cool tire swing which of course had to come down with the tree...

Man, you are not that foreign to all this in any respect. Trees suck. In Andrew an Australian pine fell on our house. It is not very fun to hear something like that from the inside. Yeah, it is the little things that count. Charley killed a plant of mine that I had had since 5th grade (this devastated me more than anything). When the eye rotated over us, aside from the winds piping down to a breeze, the sun came out. It was the first and last time I saw the sun that day. It was warm, and it got so calm that I considered swimming out to the boat to check the only working barometer at the time (my better judgment won me over --we didn’t have access to radar so I didn’t know how much of the eye we would get). It is really quite beautiful when you think about it. We got a few minutes to relax, and most importantly we knew the worst was over. Andrew happened at night and the lull was a bit longer. By then all the power was out, but the sky had an eerie florescent green glow to it so we could make things out.

I just have the feeling that every year, someone is due (big time) as Florida was last year. A few years ago it was Texas. But anytime I see these things cutting through the Bahamas and heading for Hattaras, I get a little worried...more than a little worried.

Fortunately, for as bad as it was for Florida last year, obviously it could have been worse. We're in that period of increased activity and I am doubtful el nino conditions will exist by the time cane season comes around.

Last post from work...

A good video overall... I would have liked to have seen more of the wind, but that would put your life in danger, so it seems we're at a stalemate there. You should delete the audio and make a narrative. It would make it sound much more professional.

Next summer, when Franklin is a CAT V threatening Punta Gorda, Jeff has promised to provide outside footage with a live feed back to HCW & CFHC. That way we have a win/win proposition.

Jeff makes hurricane coverage history, dying in the process, and we get to see it happen live...

Actually, and on a serious note, I'd say to almost bag all the audio and insert more ***-kicking music...especially the stuff from Twister, and most importantly, "Respect the Wind" by Eddie & Alex Van Halen...

Do leave in the quote "I hope my snake is OK". That's priceless:icon_twis

Jason, did the sound of the storm not impress you? Listen to it again with your speakers turned way up. Listen for the singing (during the 2nd half)

Oh and Phil, it's a deal.

EDIT: I have not figured out what to do price wise. I am going to try and send everything during spring break (next week), so you will all know by then. :)
