Why do you lurk and never post ? I would love to find out the reasons why you have not made a first post yet.

I think people lurk because the instant they join, the ooze in their brain cavities melts, leaving them permanently frozen in front of their computers, with no way to leave the site. This theory must be correct, because nothing here is remotely interesting enough to leave someone captivated to a degree where they will spend hours at a time reading what we have to say. Those who survive this process, become leading posting members.

Is that what happened to you Jeff? Did your brain cavities melt? I thought you used to be smarter....now I know why...

Jeffery McElroy

I consider myself to be somewhat intelligent for my age at least. I have a somewhat low IQ, so I don't know how I will turn out in the big scheme of things. Perhaps I will hit this 'critical mass' or something.

Yeah. Hey Keith, what is your IQ, if you don't mind my asking? I think mine is well below one hundred, so apparently I am below average.
Admittedly, this is not something that I am particularly proud of.
However, I ascribe to the theory of multiple intelligences, so I do not hold this against myself when thinking critically (and I don’t think anyone else holds it against me either).

What is intelligence? The definition I like is that intelligence is "the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations ... also : the skilled use of reason" (7)*. I have heard some people misuse the word smart to mean knowledgeable. That is like confusing velocity with distance. That one can lead to the other does not mean that they are the same thing.

I.Q. = Intelligence Quotient

Originally, "IQ" tests were created to be able to identify children who might need special education due to their retarded mental development (1). Binet's test included varied questions and tasks. The tasks even included unwrapping a piece of candy and comparing the weights of different objects (4)!

To relate the mental development of a child to the child's chronological age the IQ was invented. IQ = (MA/CA) * 100. The intelligence quotient was equal to 100 times the Mental Age divided by the Chronological Age. For example, if a certain child started reading, etc., at the age of 3 (CA) and average children start reading, etc., at the age of 6 (MA), the child would get an IQ score of 200. (Such a score is very, very rare). Since people wanted to also use IQs for adults, that formula was not very useful since raw scores start to level off around the age of 16 (2).

Thus the deviation IQ replaced the ratio IQ. It compares people of the same age or age category and assumes that IQ is normally distributed, that the average (mean) is 100 and that the standard deviation is something like 15 (IQ tests sometimes differ in their standard deviations).

What is a standard deviation (SD)? Simply put, the standard deviation is a measure of the spread of the sample from the mean. As a rule of thumb, about 2/3 of a sample is within 1 standard deviation from the mean. About 95% of the sample will be within 2 standard deviations from the mean (3).

With the standard deviation and a mean, you can calculate percentiles. Percentiles tell you the percent of people that have a score equal to or lower than a certain score.

High IQ societies (http://members.shaw.ca/delajara/criteria.html) ask for certain percentile scores on IQ tests for you to be eligible to join them. Mensa asks for scores at the 98th percentile or higher. For a list of the selection criteria of other societies, click here (http://members.shaw.ca/delajara/criteria.html).

There have been various classification systems for IQ.

Terman's classification was (6):

<TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=1 width="50%" align=center border=1><TBODY><TR><TD>IQ Range</TD><TD>
Classification

</TD></TR><TR><TD>140 and over</TD><TD>Genius or near genius</TD></TR><TR><TD>120-140</TD><TD>Very superior intelligence</TD></TR><TR><TD>110-120</TD><TD>Superior intelligence</TD></TR><TR><TD>90-110</TD><TD>Normal or average intelligence</TD></TR><TR><TD>80-90</TD><TD>Dullness</TD></TR><TR><TD>70-80</TD><TD>Borderline deficiency</TD></TR><TR><TD>Below 70</TD><TD>Definite feeble-mindedness</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

(Terman wrote the Stanford-Binet test (1), which has a SD of 16.)

Later, Wechsler thought that it would be much more legitimate to base his classifications on the Probable Error (PE) so his classification was (6):

<TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=1 width="50%" align=center border=1><TBODY><TR><TD>Classification </TD><TD>IQ Limits</TD><TD>Percent Included </TD></TR><TR><TD>Very Superior</TD><TD>128 and over</TD><TD>2.2</TD></TR><TR><TD>Superior</TD><TD>120-127</TD><TD>6.7</TD></TR><TR><TD>Bright Normal</TD><TD>111-119</TD><TD>16.1</TD></TR><TR><TD>Average</TD><TD>91-110</TD><TD>50</TD></TR><TR><TD>Dull Normal</TD><TD>80-90</TD><TD>16.1</TD></TR><TR><TD>Borderline</TD><TD>66-79</TD><TD>6.7</TD></TR><TR><TD>Defective</TD><TD>65 and below</TD><TD>2.2</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Mental deficiency used to be more finely classified using the following technical terms that later began to be abused by the rest of society (5):

<TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=1 width="35%" align=center border=1><TBODY><TR><TD>IQ Range</TD><TD>Classification</TD></TR><TR><TD>70-80</TD><TD>Borderline deficiency</TD></TR><TR><TD>50-69</TD><TD>Moron</TD></TR><TR><TD>20-49</TD><TD>Imbecile</TD></TR><TR><TD>below 20</TD><TD>Idiot</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>These are now largely obsolete and mental deficiency is now generally called mental retardation. The following is the currently used classification of retardation in the USA (5):

<TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=1 width="35%" align=center border=1><TBODY><TR><TD>IQ Range</TD><TD>Classification</TD></TR><TR><TD>50-69</TD><TD>Mild</TD></TR><TR><TD>35-49</TD><TD>Moderate</TD></TR><TR><TD>20-34</TD><TD>Severe</TD></TR><TR><TD>below 20</TD><TD>Profound</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Moreover, "educable mentally retarded" is roughly equivalent to mild mental retardation, and "trainable" mentally retarded is roughly equivalent to moderate (5). The DSM now requires an assessment of a person's adaptive functioning as an additional criterion for labeling someone retarded. IQ is not enough. Maybe the same sort of thing should be done for labeling somebody a genius.

LI Phil

i think iq is bullshit, anyway, but the last time i was tested (about 10 years ago), i scored a 149. so i guess that makes me like a super-genius according to the above information.

yeah right.

i place much more faith in the actual USE of one's intelligence, rather than the raw intelligence itself...things have always come fairly easy to me, so i tend to be rather lazy...with the exception of the computer of course, where i would guestimate my "computer iq" to be somewhere between "borderline deficiency" and "moron"

The Bug

I agree IQ is BS. I know a lot of people who are very smart but have no idea about things going on in the world around them. I think to be intelligent requires knowledge of a lot more than just IQ smart standards.

Thanks for posting this, as it was quite informative. I don’t really know what to think though. According to an IQ test, I am average/dull. However, talk to my teachers, and they will tell you I am an artistic genius. I have talked to my psychologist about this, and he says adhd hinders my creative potential, but I find that I am much more abstract artistically when I am off my medicine, and I muster the focus to do so when necessary (ie, when I am doing something I enjoy). With that said, perhaps adhd is actually some form of a heightened sense of artistic talent? One of my mom's causes is Autism, and she has a friend who is autistic, yet has profound insight on many things. The mind is so vast and incredible; a simple test cannot possibly determine all there is to your intelligence. If highly immature, I am an intelligent reasonable person, in an age group of unreasonable adolescence. This is why I have no friends and cannot stand general education, I think.

I would still be interested to take the test again, as last time I took it I was very young.

Well, I like psychologist… but not neurologist. Every one that I have encountered has been obnoxious. I had my brain MRI’d once, and I have this large collection of fluid trained up in my brain. I used to have severe migraines, but I don’t have them as often now. Yeah… I’m messed up.

EDIT: Now Keith, what does the process of growing up entail?

LI Phil

According to an IQ test, I am average/dull

i'd say that's about right, but not in terms of iq...

i've done extensive research into iq tests (though not in some 20 years or so), and they have always been inherently biased, especially against the lower classes...(so jeff has no excuse there)...i will always remember one question on a test which was given to about 1.5 million "doughboys" (WWI infantrymen and draftees, not officers), which was the picture of a tennis court without a net...as a test of iq, these men were asked to "draw in" what was missing...now probably 90% or more of those taking the test would never have even seen a tennis court, so how could they possibly know what was missing? Yet, this was taken as a sign of low intelligence...of course the "upper" (leisure) classes would recognize a missing net, so they would correctly insert what was missing...

is this a fair judge of intelligence???

they've gotten much better over the years, removing many of the cultural and class biases so rampant in the early tests, but they, at least as of 20 or so years ago, were still held as being biased against the lower classes

More than just IQ tests, i think most intelligence or apptitude tests are crap, i would trust achievement tests more. I know kids who got 1400's and 1500's on their SAT's and are dumb as dirt at school, while my best friend who has had straight A's throughout her life got a 1010, not that bad but deffinatley not what you would expect when you see her work in school.

My parents went to Cancun. When I get enough money, I would like to take a boat of mine and cruise all the islands off the Caribbean. Yeah, I want that boat.

keith said "MEDICATE" not "MEDITATE"

and last time i was in Ft. Laud. there was this really HOT co-ed like 2 years older than me (this was around Thanksgiving time in 1987)...she said she was having some "marital problems" and we hooked up after a night of jello shots and cheap beers in the elbow room (if i remember correctly)

we drove for miles and miles to some place i barely remember, but all i know is there was all kinds of star wars stuff all over the place (she said it was her "roommate's" but if she was supposedly married, it had to either be her hubby's, or hers, or she had a secret house unbeknownst to her hubby). one thing led to another, and eventually my lightsabre lost it's sheath...we never kept up but i did get one letter about 9 months later announcing she had given birth to a son and that it definitely wasn't her husband's...

she said i'd learn of my son someday through some kind of divine circumstance (which i have now interpreted to be a chance meeting on a weather board talkback)...

you do the math...

Keith was referring to an earlier conversation I had with him, in which he suggested meditation to fix my adhd.

My mom was married in 87’ and I was born in 88’. She went to University of Miami to become a teacher, and then later a realtor, and was my dad’s girlfriend since high school. Juli was born less than a year after hurricane Andrew, and Jessica a year after that (poor mom). Now we are one big happy family.

i never said she was...a co-ed is what she told me she was, and she couldn't have been more than 22-23...perhaps also, that is why she tried to play the star wars memorabelia on her "roommate"...she never said SHE liked it.

I'm toooo inteligant (sp?) for my age. I use too big of words and it makes me sound like an adult. I HATE that!

This post is priceless. You are too intelligent BUT you can't spell intelligent. Sorry I couldn't resist
