TERRE HAUTE, IN -- One of two young boys allegedly abducted by their father was found dead in a lake Wednesday, and the other boy and their father were found nearby with knife wounds, authorities said.
Katron Walker, 32, had cut his own throat and stabbed himself in the chest, Terre Haute Police Sgt. David Smith said. His 2-year-old son, Monte, was also hospitalized with injuries.
Police were called to the lake early Wednesday after a resident recognized Walker's van from an Amber Alert and spotted him with the boys.
"He was running from a trailer and had both boys in his arms and he jumped into the lake with his sons," Smith said.
The older boy, 4-year-old Collin, was found dead in the lake just south of Terre Haute, police said. Officials at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis would not provide details on the surviving boy's condition.
The Amber Alert was issued Tuesday after police say Katron Walker abducted his sons their grandfather's backyard.
Their mother, Theresa Walker, said she had called her husband from work that day to say she wanted a divorce. Shortly afterward, Katron Walker showed up in the yard wielding a knife and took the boys, said Michael Dwyer, the boys' grandfather.
"My sister went out and she was trying to get them back," Dwyer said. "He threw her down and she came right back at him and he kicked her twice in the chest."
Walker had taken his sons to the home of a friend who did not know an Amber Alert had been issued for the boys, police said.
