Eight-foot waves hit Southland beaches
By Kristopher Hanson, Staff writer

SUNSET BEACH -- Funny how events 4,000 miles away can wash up on our shores.
A giant winter storm in New Zealand last week is credited with the big summer surf hitting Southern California's south-facing beaches this week.
On Monday, the National Weather Service issued a surf advisory as swells up to 8 feet pounded area beaches, with more big breakers expected through Wednesday.

“It's like dropping a rock in a lake and watching the ripples extend out,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Ken Clark.

In this case, the rock was a giant South Pacific storm that spawned 60-foot waves at its center and blanketed temperate New Zealand with snow, rain and powerful winds last week.

Officials at south-facing area beaches, which include Seal Beach, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach, reported no damage or injuries on Monday, but said lifeguards

were out in full force.

The big waves will be complemented by moderate temperatures, which won't break the 70s at the beaches through the week's end.

Inland, the mercury will rise to the mid-80s by today and high-80s to low-90s by Thursday, Clark said.

Valleys are expected to see 100-degree heat by Friday, Clark said.
