After a cool and cloudy September, October kicks off with some summer-like warmth. Today, southwest winds will send our afternoon temperatures well into the upper 70s. But it looks like this warm air won’t be around for too long.

For tonight, a cold front will move into the region from the northwest. Skies will become mostly cloudy and there will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms. But because this cold front is moving slowly, we shouldn’t see a real difference in our temperatures until Wednesday with highs in the 60s.
Tonight
Showers and t’storms possible. Mild, with a low around 60.
Tomorrow
Variable clouds with showers and t’storms possible. High in the upper 70s.

Forecast models show the weather getting quite active by the middle of the week. A strong area of low pressure developing in the Plains will bring clouds, rain and eventually, colder air. By the end of the week, high temperatures may only be in the 40s – with rain. With night time lows expected to be in the 30s, an occasional flurry isn’t out of the question.

A warmer than average winter may be in the cards for West Michigan. According to the latest El Nino update from climatologists at the Climate Prediction Center, an El Nino – which is the unusual warming of the surface water of the Pacific Ocean near the equator – continues to build. Historically, an El Nino produces warmer than normal winter seasons in West Michigan.

A strong area of low pressure in the upper atmosphere will be kicking out of the Southwest today, heading from the Plains. By Wednesday, it will bring a soaking storm our way. In addition to rain, we may hear a few rumbles of thunder and the wind will be getting gusty too.

At the same time, the coldest air of the season will be dropping southeastward from central Canada. The cold air will intersect the rain late Wednesday. That’s when the first snow flurries of the season may fall in West Michigan. The moisture will be hanging around for the remainder of the week, keeping the possibility of a rain/snow mix going in the late night and early morning hours Thursday and Friday.

Christina514
10-11-2006, 12:10 PM
It will be a wet Wednesday across West Michigan. Periods of rain will mix with a few isolated t-storms as a strong cold front sweeps through the state. It will become windy this afternoon, with temperatures dropping. Daytime highs will flirt with 60-degrees, but will drop through the 50's this afternoon & will fall to the upper 40s by evening. It will turn even colder tonight, with rain showers mixing with snow showers.

The storm center that will create this active weather will remain nearly stationary north of Lake Superior for Thursday and Friday. We will continue to see 15-30 mph winds with unusually cold temperatures for mid October. There will be snow showers at inland locations mixed with rain near the lake. If there is any accumulation it will only be on grassy areas Thursday night and Friday morning. The snow showers should become mostly rain showers for the Friday evening football games. It will, however, be a windy, cold & wet night for Friday Football Frenzy!

There may still be a few rain and snow showers mixed on Saturday morning, but Saturday afternoon and Sunday should be dry with slightly warmer temperatures. Monday also looks dry but there may be more showers on Tuesday.

After several days of December-like temperatures, it is finally time to send the chill out. The cold air is moving off the Eastern Seaboard today, and much milder air will take its place.

Today in West Michigan, sunshine and warming south winds will provide highs back in the lower 50s. By Wednesday, we could even see the lower 60s! So it looks as though this is a trend that will stick around for a few days, meaning you won’t need to bundle up too much on Election Day.

No Arctic outbreaks are expected this week in West Michigan—but there won’t be a lot of sunshine either.

Once again, a series of storms is set to hit the West Coast. This will prevent any real cold air from surging out of Canada, and this weather pattern will keep quite a bit of precipitation in the forecast.

Monday, one such storm will move across the Plains. South winds will develop in West Michigan, sending mild and moist air our way. With all of the snow cover still on the ground, low clouds and possibly even some drizzle will develop. Once the actual storm system moves more into the Western Great Lakes, a better chance for rain will occur on Tuesday. A chance of rain and snow showers will then exist all throughout the workweek.

More unseasonably warm air will be making a run at West Michigan this weekend. Ahead of an approaching cold front, a southerly breeze will push this afternoon’s temperatures to near 50 degrees. Also ahead of the front will be considerable cloudiness. We may see a little rain developing by tonight. Winds will be gusty at times, blowing to 20 miles per hour.

Sunday, expect temperatures to be well into the 50s, marking the seventh time this month we’ve been in the 40s or 50s. Forecast models indicate cooler air arriving by the middle of next week.

This Afternoon...Considerable clouds. Highs in the lower 50s. South winds 10 to 20 mph...With gusts to around 30 mph.

Tonight...Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain showers. Lows in the lower 40s. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 30 percent.

Sunday...Mostly cloudy with a chance of light rain showers. Highs in the lower 50s. West winds 5 to 15 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Chance of rain 30 percent.

Sunday Night...Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain showers. Lows in the upper 30s. East winds 5 to 10 mph becoming north after midnight. Chance of rain 50 percent

An area of low pressure moving from central Iowa to west central Michigan today bringing more rain. This is part of the same storm that has made headlines the past few days by dumping up to two feet of snow on eastern Colorado, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights at Denver’s airport and the closing of several interstates crossing the state.

We are on the east side of the storm – the warmer side. A surge of mild air from the south will push this afternoon’s temperatures into the middle and upper 40s. Rainfall will be persistent, but not likely heavy. Forecast models indicate between a quarter of an inch and half an inch of precipitation may fall. There is a slight chance of a thunderstorm or two forming. How odd it would be to hear thunder just a few days before Christmas – and on the first full day of winter!

Well my prediction with all this change in weather is ....Since I have to work Tuesday I will get dumped on Christmas Night! (damat)

--------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are wishing for a white West Michigan Christmas we might see some snow late Christmas afternoon, but we’ll have to deal with above normal temperatures for today and Sunday before the cooler weather comes.

Today we’ll see mostly cloudy skies with scattered light rain showers. If you’re running around doing last minute shopping you’ll not only have to take on the crowds, but also strong winds. We could see gusts out of the West up to 35 mph. Highs are expected to reach the lower 40’s.

For Christmas Eve temperatures are expected to get to the mid 40’s and we should see mostly sunny skies. So, if you’re driving to visit family or friends, don’t forget your sunglasses.

As Christmas Day approaches, we’ll see clouds build throughout the day. Right now models are indicating morning sun and afternoon clouds. In the afternoon we have a chance of seeing some light snow, although temperatures are expected to be in the upper 30s. Overnight temperatures should drop to the mid 20s.

Christina514

First, it happened over the Christmas weekend. Now, it looks like it could happen again to ring in the New Year. A possible blizzard is headed toward eastern Colorado and the Plains.
This is another powerful West Coast storm that has wreaked havoc in its path. Hurricane force-winds pounded areas like Slide Mountain , California , with 128mph wind gusts. Once the storm moves to parts of Colorado , up to two feet of snow could fall, causing problems for flights and car travel this holiday weekend. The Denver International Airport is expecting anything from three to 20 inches of snow. Considering what happened last time, with three thousand passengers and employees stranded, the airport is preparing for the worst.

At first in West Michigan, this storm system will allow a lot of warm, moist air to return. Today, some sunshine is expected by the afternoon with highs in the mid 40s. Some clouds will increase on Friday, but it will be even warmer with highs in the upper 40s. It looks like this storm system won't bring back cold air and possibly some snow until Saturday night.

Flouting the blue skies and sunshine, the power stayed off for many in Battle Creek on Tuesday, the effects of an ice storm that pounded the area earlier in the week.

According to Consumers Energy, electricity may not be restored to all of its area customers until midnight today.

Before noon Tuesday, the number of Consumers Energy customers without electricity had dipped to 4,700. By 9:30 p.m., however, it climbed back up to 5,400. Both numbers were below the high of 10,148.

"Activity has still been happening causing outages," said Tim Pietryga, a spokesman for Consumers Energy. "There's still a lot of ice on the tree limbs and on the lines. ... Even though the sun was out today, there was not a lot of thawing."

Pietryga said ice storms can be more destructive to the company's system, as it can require restringing wires and resetting poles.

Calhoun County was one of the areas worst hit in the state by the storm. According to the National Weather Service, .69 inches of icy precipitation was measured at the W.K. Kellogg Airport from Sunday night through Monday morning. The only area that measured more was Jackson County, which saw .8 inches fall.

Bitter Cold Air and Snow On The WayAs the cold air moves in, lake effect snow showers will develop and bands of snow will stretch from Lake Michigan to the middle part of the Lower Peninsula. Six to Twelve inches of snow is possible by Saturday night. The high wind gusts will create areas of blowing and drifting snow and reduce visibilities to near zero.

Weather records show it has been two years since we’ve had a below zero temperature reading in South Central Michigan. And it has been eight years since we had a day when the maximum temperature was in the single digits. That’s quite a while!

Cold Weather Still Here!

After a third straight morning with subzero temperatures, West Michigan begins a slow warm-up today. Even so, temperatures will be much colder than average -- down about 20 degrees this afternoon from a "typical" early February day. A brisk breeze will continue to hold wind chills below zero with occasional snow and blowing snow.

An Alberta Clipper -- zipping southeast from the Canadian Plains to the Ohio River Valley -- will bring increasingly cloudy skies to West Michigan today. Forecast models indicate the center of the disturbance will pass to our south. However, our proximity to the storm may mean a couple of inches of accumulating snow today. As the system generates a little more wind over Lake Michigan, the lakeshore communities may see a little more snow than the inland areas.

The weather pattern over West Michigan remains tranquil, and cold. Dry air moving in from the northwest will provide areas of sunshine today. Working against the dry air is the effect of Lake Michigan. As the cold air moves over the Lake, clouds and areas of snow develop. Surrounding areas (Wisconsin, the eastern Lower Peninsula) will see abundant sunshine today, as they did Thursday.

Looking ahead to next week, forecast models show a reinforcing surge of cold air heading our way. So, don’t look for a warm up anytime soon!

A moisture-soaked storm moving from the southern Plains to the Ohio Valley today will bring a wintry wallop to parts of West Michigan today. As the moisture collides with cold air moving south from Canada, the result will be periods of heavy snow, particularly along and south of I-94, where several inches of accumulation are possible. The snowfall will diminish rapidly from south to north. Areas of West Michigan along and north of I-96 likely won't see more than an inch or two of snow.

Additionally, a gusty northeast wind will cause drifting and blowing of snow, and will keep wind chills near zero degrees. The air temperature will be stuck in the middle to upper teens all day long.

Christina514
02-13-2007, 10:41 AM
Ten inches of snow may fall today and tonight in the Coldwater area, with 2-5 inches expected around Battle Creek, the National Weather Service forecasts this morning.

The forecast as of 6 a.m.: Periods of snow with areas of blowing snow. High near 20. Wind chill values between -1 and -6. Blustery, with an east-northeast wind between 16 and 22 mph.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Branch County and areas to the south and east of Battle Creek.

For Calhoun, Kalamazoo and Barry Counties, a less-ominous "snow and blowing snow advisory" is in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

With gusty 25- to 30-mph winds, blowing and drifting snow will be a problem, the weather service said. During the day, the wind is expected to blow from the east-northeast, shifting to the north-northeast tonight.

Travel may be difficult, with some roads becoming snow-covered by tonight.

A foot or more of snow may fall to the south and east of south-central Michigan, with predictions of near-blizzard conditions posted for northern Indiana and northwestern Ohio.

Once the snowstorm moves out, some mighty cold air will swoop back into the weather picture.

The low temperature Thursday morning should be around 1 degree, with a high that day around 14, the weather service said.

By Monday, though, forecasters were predicting a day with above-freezing temperatures — 33 degrees — for Presidents Day.

Christina514
02-13-2007, 07:09 PM
A major winter storm will be tracking south of Michigan tonight, producing a large area of heavy snow and even blizzard conditions.

Winter weather warnings and advisories cover most of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, as well as a portion of southern lower Michigan. This includes the Jackson area, where up to 9 inches of storm total accumulation is expected by 7 am Wednesday. Gusty northeast winds to 30 mph will result in blowing and drifting snow, at times reducing the visibility to near zero.

Lighter accumulations will occur farther north, with 3 to 6 inches anticipated from Kalamazoo to Lansing. 1 to 3 inches is expected from Holland to Grand Rapids to Alma, with only a dusting farther north.

More Cold Air and Heavy Lake Effect Possible Wednesday Night and Thursday

Heavy snow will end by early Wednesday morning as the storm moves toward the east coast. Another blast of cold air will follow in the wake of this system, and heavy lake effect snow showers will become possible Wednesday night and Thursday. Several inches of new snow could fall, particularly west and south of Grand Rapids due to a northwest wind.

Snow showers will be winding down across West Michigan today as the powerful winter storm which moved in late Tuesday afternoon moves east. Though the storm is gone, its effects remain in the forms of wind and cold air. Today’s maximum temperatures will be in the middle teens, which combined with a north wind gusting to 30 miles per hour, drives the wind chill to as low as minus five to minus ten degrees. Remember to cover as much skin as possible before going outside. And don’t forget to take special care of outdoor pets, providing a shelter from the wind along with extra food in the bowl and water, not ice, in the dish.

A reinforcing shot of cold air arrives later in the week, which means temperatures will remain several degrees colder than average.

Christina514
02-16-2007, 07:01 AM
Despite the presence of some sunshine in West Michigan today, temperatures will remain about 10 to 12 degrees colder than average. Actually our afternoon temps will be the warmest we’ve seen in a couple of days, thanks to a southwesterly wind, replacing the cold north and northwest breeze. The wind will be brisk during the afternoon, blowing at 10 to 20 miles per hour, pushing wind chills down to the single digits. Remember to take special care to protect your skin.

An approaching disturbance will bring snow to the northern Mississippi Valley today and additional cloudiness to our area tonight. Snow is possible Saturday with light accumulations possible. Forecast models indicate the colder than average air that has been around for about the last three weeks will finally give way to a warm up next week. Maximum temperatures are expected to be well into the 30s by next Tuesday and Wednesday with 40 degrees possible Thursday. Compared to the cold, snowy conditions we’ve had lately, that sounds like a heat wave!

An Alberta Clipper, moving just to the south of West Michigan today, will bring periods of snow with light accumulations possible. As the Clipper moves off to the east, winds will shift from southwest to northwest and colder air moves in. As the winds pick up speed in the afternoon, the wind chill will dip well into the teens.

Sunday will be much colder with lake effect snow showers likely. Snow belt areas could see some accumulating snowfall. Wind chills Sunday will be near zero degrees.

The recent cold weather over much of the United States makes it hard to believe that last month was the warmest on record across the globe. A report issued Friday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says last month was particularly warm compared to average in the Northern Hemisphere.

The NOAA report says temperatures last month in the contiguous United States were a little closer to “normal.” Here in Michigan, the average temperature for the month was the 100th highest in 113 years of records.

Monday’s maximum temperatures were in the lower to middle 40s around West Michigan, the warmest in more than three weeks. Other than Monday, we’ve seen a temperature above freezing just once in the last three weeks. The high temperature during that span averaged just 19 degrees – about 15 degrees colder than what is typical for this time of year.

The jet stream pattern has changed from being “amplified,” with large north-south waves in the flow, to a “zonal flow” where the air travels from west-to-east. The zonal flow has allowed warmer air trapped in the south to migrate northward, warming our region up. The zonal flow is expected to continue through the week, hence the forecast for maximum temperatures at or above “normal.”

The weather today in West Michigan will literally be the calm before the storm. In the wake of the Alberta Clipper which brought Thursday’s gusty winds, a north breeze will bring colder air to our region. Temperatures this afternoon will struggle to move higher than 30 degrees – leaving us several degrees colder than average.

A powerful storm will be developing today in the lee of the central Rockies, just east of Denver. Forecast models show the disturbance moving into the central Plains Saturday morning. It may produce the first large outbreak of severe weather this year. Central Kansas, Oklahoma and a portion of north Texas are on alert for severe storms from this afternoon through Saturday morning.

The storm is expected to head our way Saturday night and Sunday. It looks like a messy mix of precipitation – frozen and liquid – is possible here from late Saturday through Sunday. That mix might include some freezing rain between midnight Saturday and daybreak Sunday.

High today : 57F

The cold front which raced across West Michigan Thursday afternoon didn’t get much beyond the Michigan-Indiana border. Today, the front will be stalled just to our south, stretching from the mid-Atlantic coast, through north-central Indiana to central Nebraska. Clouds and rain will be all along the front. Areas south of I-94 will see more clouds than those well north.

The story doesn’t change much for Saturday; again, considerable cloudiness with showers likely for the first part of the weekend. Sunday, the outlook for sunshine improves with continued above-average temperatures.

Christina514
03-25-2007, 11:21 AM
Today
Mostly cloudy with possible showers & thunderstorms. Very warm with highs in the upper 60s to the lower 70s.

Tonight
Showers & thunderstorms likely. Warm overnight lows in the upper 50s to the lower 60s.
At least 13 tornadoes swept along the New Mexico-Texas border on Friday, destroying homes and businesses and injuring several people. The worst damage happened in the towns of Logan and Clovis, where authorities say there’s an extensive strip of damage.

Unfortunately, this same storm system is headed to West Michigan Sunday. An impressive low pressure system will head northeast, and this will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Any of these thunderstorms could become strong, producing heavy rain, frequent lightning, powerful winds and large hail. If you do have any outdoor plans, be sure to check the latest weather conditions first because with Sunday’s heat many folks will want to spend some time outside.

Sunday, south winds will pump in lots of warm air and lots of moisture. We should see afternoon highs all the way up into the upper 60s to the lower 70s! This is twenty degrees above average for this time of year, and this warmth could last well into the work week.

Today
Mostly cloudy, breezy and cooler with some scattered light showers. Steady temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s. Winds east at 15 to 25 mph.

Tonight
Mostly cloudy, windy and colder with a few scattered light showers possible. Overnight low in the low to middle 30s.

The air in West Michigan today will be much cooler, much more like late March. As the cold front moved across the Lower Peninsula Tuesday night, it triggered several showers and thunderstorms. The storms brought no more than some lightning and rain. Severe weather was reported in the eastern part of the state with hail up to an inch of diameter falling in the Detroit area.

Forecast models indicate that in addition to the cooler air, we’ll see considerable cloudiness with off and on showers. So, keep an umbrella at the ready.

Today
Mostly cloudy and cooler with showers likely, t’storms possible. The high will be in the upper 50s.

Tonight
Saturday night: Rain likely with thunderstorms possible. The low will be in the middle 40s.

A powerful spring storm moving from the Plains to the Mississippi Valley this weekend will bring showers and thunderstorms to West Michigan. The past few days have been rough weather wise for folks in the central and southern Plains and also parts of the Rockies. Wednesday, 65 tornadoes were reported, mainly in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado. Four people were killed. Four more tornadoes were reported in Oklahoma Thursday and at least four more were reported Friday in Texas. On the west side of the storm, cold air from Canada contributed to heavy snowfall in the Rockies. Up to four feet of snow were reported in Wyoming.

As the huge disturbance gradually moves in our direction, we’ll see clouds and a cool rain today. Thunderstorms are possible late tonight and early Sunday. Another round of storms – some of which could be strong to severe may develop Sunday afternoon and evening. Unseasonably mild air returns Monday and Tuesday. Forecast models show much colder air moving in by the middle of next week.

All my storms yesterday were a bust!! They were either way north of me early in the day or way south of me later. We had some rain showers, that was about it, and I got to hear thunder off in the distance..woopie-doo!

Today
Windy and much colder with occasional snow showers and temperatures holding steady in the lower to mid 30s.

Tonight
Brisk and much colder with snow showers likely. NW winds at 15-25mph and lows in the lower to mid 20s.

Are you ready for this? A day after basking in afternoon sunshine with temperatures in the 70s, West Michigan will be battling wind, cold and snow. A powerful cold front plowed across the Lower Peninsula last night. Behind it lurks Old Man Winter. Temperatures today will be stuck in the middle 30s. With winds howling at 20 to 30 miles per hour (with higher gusts, particularly along the lakeshore), wind chills will be in the 20s. Additionally, snow showers will be scattered about all day long. The chilly air is going to be sticking around for a while -- at least through the weekend. So get used to it!

Christina514
04-06-2007, 06:34 AM
Today
Mostly cloudy, windy and cold with scattered snow showers. The high will be in the upper 20s to the lower 30s.

Tonight
Occasional snow showers with some areas picking up 2-4 inches. Lows around 20.

An area of low pressure in the upper atmosphere located over northeastern Ontario will continue to shoot cold air from Canada into West Michigan today. The result: temperatures remain much colder than average, a blustery, northwest wind will continue to blow (driving down wind chills readings) and the snow will keep on falling. Today's highs will be in the lower 30s (at best). Combined with a northwest wind gusting to 30 miles per hour, the wind chills will be in the teens and lower 20s.

There may be some areas of light accumulation today and, like Thursday, a few roads in West Michigan may get slippery. Keep that in mind if driving today or tonight. The weather pattern bringing the wintry pattern will begin to change Sunday. But substantial changes (returning warmer air and sunshine to West Michigan) aren't expected until next Monday.

Christina514
04-08-2007, 11:37 AM
Today
Mostly cloudy, breezy, and cold with a chance of snow. Highs are expected to reach the low 30s.

Tonight
Saturday night: Snow showers are likely with lows dropping to the lower 20s. Accumulation of up to an inch or two is possible.

----------------------------------------------------

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR PORTIONS OF SOUTHWEST LOWER
MICHIGAN.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT

NO HAZARDOUS WEATHER IS EXPECTED AT THIS TIME.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY

A STORM SYSTEM FROM THE SOUTHERN PLAINS WILL BRING THE THREAT OF A
SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL DURING THE MID WEEK PERIOD TO SOUTHWEST
MICHIGAN. AS ALWAYS SOME ADJUSTMENTS TO THE STORMS TRACK CAN BE
EXPECTED. IF THE STORM TRACKS CLOSER TO MICHIGAN MORE OF THE AREA
WILL SEE RAIN FROM THE SYSTEM...A FARTHER SOUTH TRACK WOULD BRING
SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN MORE SNOWFALL.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Today
After some morning fog it will be partly sunny with high temperatures in the mid 40s.

Tonight
Mostly cloudy skies with rain and snow developing. The low will be around 30.

We'll see a short break in the wintry weather of late in West Michigan today. Our region is in between a couple of disturbances -- the first, which provided a little snow and cold Monday, is moving off to the east. The second disturbance will be moving into the northern Plains today, headed our way. Before its arrival, we'll see abundant sunshine today, which will warm our temperatures into the middle and upper 40s. That will be the warmest we've been since last Tuesday, the day before the cold blast (which has lasted for a week) arrived. Though a temperature in the upper 40s would represent a warm-up, it is still about ten degrees colder than what is average for this time of year. Don't get too accustomed to the sunshine. The next arriving storm will bring a mix of rain and snow Wednesday.

Mostly Sunny
Not as Cold
HIGH: 44 LOW: 32
WINDS: W-NW 10-15 mph

A quiet weekend will emerge in West Michigan's weather. Skies will brighten today, becoming mostly sunny. Temperatures will be a little warmer than in the past couple of days, reaching the low-mid 40's this afternoon.

It will be a clear & cold Friday night, with Saturday morning lows down into the mid 20's. Saturday will start with some sunshine, though clouds will be on the increase during the afternoon. Sunday looks cloudy, with the chance for a few sprinkles or flurries during the day. Highs over the weekend will be in the 40s---still at least 10 degrees below average.

Milder air will return next week, with temperatures moderating into the 50s early next week. Much of next week should be dry, with a mixture of clouds & sunshine returning.

Mostly cloudy with rain showers likely an a chance for some thunderstorms. Cooler with highs in the upper 60. Windy with gusts up to 30mph.

Tonight
Partly cloudy and cooler with a low in the low to mid 40s.

After a weekend filled with sunshine and summer-like temperatures, our work week will begin on a much different note. A storm system that has produced nearly a dozen tornadoes over the Central Plains is set to hit West Michigan late Sunday night and Monday. Severe weather is not expected, but an isolated severe thunderstorm isn't out of the question.

It's not until Monday evening that clearing skies will return to the area. Winds will shift to the northwest, and this will pull in cooler air. By midweek, highs will only be in the upper 50s to the lower 60s.

Christina514

Today
Cloudy with scattered light rain showers possible. Continued cool with a high in the low to middle 50s.

Tonight
Mostly cloudy skies this evening then becoming partly cloudy. The low will be in the low 40s.

For the third straight day in West Michigan, an umbrella and raincoat will likely come in handy. The area of low pressure which brought rain Wednesday and Thursday is moving away. But it isn't moving fast enough to take all the clouds and precipitation out of our area. As the storm center neared West Michigan late Thursday afternoon, it spawned some powerful thunderstorms in northwest Indiana. Near Laporte, just south of the Michigan state line, a tornado flipped a police car over with the officer inside. The officer reportedly sustained minor injuries. The storms moved northeast, crossing the Michigan state line into Berrien County where a sheriff's deputy reported a funnel cloud that was not in contact with the ground. In the early evening, the storms weakened rapidly, becoming mainly scattered rain showers.

What a way to end April! The last weekend of the month felt much more like June with highs ten to fifteen degrees above average. But now, it looks like a storm system is going to allow cooler air to make a comeback.

The second of two storms is set to push through West Michigan on Monday. At first, clouds will increase and rain showers will be possible in the afternoon. Instability is then expected to increase, and thunderstorms will be possible Monday evening and Tuesday. Any of these storms could produce heavy rain, large hail and strong damaging winds.

An area of low pressure moving across the southern Lower Peninsula today will bring showers and thunderstorms to West Michigan. Some of the storms may bring periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, lightning and small hail. Severe weather forecasters at the Storm Prediction Center have placed our area in a zone where there is a slight risk for severe thunderstorms.
Behind the disturbance, drier air moves over our area tonight, putting an end to the rain threat and clearing the clouds. Forecast models show a tranquil weather pattern from Wednesday through Sunday, which means several sunny, mild days are ahead.

Today
Sunny and pleasant. The high will be in the upper 60s.

Tonight
Mostly clear with a few passing clouds. The low will be in the lower to middle 40s.

West Michigan will be bathed in sunshine today. An area of high pressure just northeast of Lake Huron will bring dry air to the state, resulting in the sun. If forecast models are correct, the high will be our friend for the next few days. That means you can expect plenty of sunshine right through the weekend. The May sun will warm temperatures up a bit too. Expect cool nights and mild days. The weather was anything but calm in Texas Wednesday. According to the Storm Prediction Center, severe thunderstorms produced about four dozen reports of high winds and several tornadoes in the Lone Star state. In all, there were more than 100 reports of severe weather across the nation Wednesday.

Tonight, the search continues for Greensburg, Kansas storm victims. So far at least eight people have lost their lives to a massive tornado, now classified an F5, which is the highest category on its scale.

Meteorologists of the National Weather Service said Friday night's tornado had wind estimated at 205mph, and carved a track 1.7 miles wide and 22 miles long.

The last tornado of this kind happened back on May 3, 1999, in Oklahoma City. Thirty-six people were killed.

This big weekend storm system is expected to track east over the next several hours. Forecast models are predicting showers and thunderstorms to finally hit West Michigan as early as late Monday night, and thunderstorms could stay in the forecast until Thursday.

Today

Mostly Sunny this afternoon but cool with a high in the lower 60s.

Tonight

Clear and cool tonight with frost possible. The low will fall to the low to mid 30s.

Today in West Michigan, the latest storm system will be moving off to the east, and it will take the rain and clouds with it.

Sunshine is expected to return by Thursday afternoon, but we won't see a big warm up just yet. With breezy north/northwest winds, afternoon highs will still be ten degrees below average in the lower to mid 60s. By tonight, clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to drop off to unseasonable lows in the 30s.

Because of this, a Freeze Watch has been issued for the following counties: Oceana, Newaygo, Mecosta and Montcalm. This is in effect until Friday morning.

Other areas of West Michigan could also be placed under a Frost Advisory later in the day.

This morning's chill -- complete with areas of frost -- will quickly be replaced by warmer air this afternoon. The mid-May sunshine will combine with a gentle breeze from the southwest to warm temperatures to the upper 60s. You won't have to worry about those tender plants tonight as the warmth means lows will be in the 40s Saturday morning. Another cold front is projected to pass over West Michigan Saturday evening, perhaps triggering a few showers and thunderstorms. A few showers may linger into early Sunday. Otherwise, the weekend weather looks pretty good with partly sunny skies and pleasant temperatures.

A surge of warm air moves into West Michigan today, bringing a taste of summer. It may be the warmest air we've had so far this year. The warmest temperatures so far is 84 degrees, recorded May 8th and 14th. Forecast models project we'll see maximum temperatures in that neighborhood both today and tomorrow. In addition to short sleeves, you'll also need some sun screen if planning to be outside for long. We'll see abundant sunshine both today and tomorrow. Showers and thunderstorms creep back into the forecast Thursday.
