That's the colder cloudtops of the CDO (central dense overcast) on infrared satellite imagery. Take a look at http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/FLOAT/IR4/20.jpg and look at how much of the CDO is black. Rollie's right too, I don't recall much of the black signature on the Katrina images... |
