Could be a strange cloud formation or a very cool rain shaft. It looks like a tornado not touching the ground. Warnings are only issued if detected by NWS radar or reported by spotters or EMP's.

What is this?
So a friend took a picture not far from me today. There wasn't any severe storms here, only a few storms that popped up and just rained. She snapped this picture and it's very freaky. I am mad i missed it.
We did not have any warnings and it only rained.

before 'digital cameras' I can remember once seeing 5 'tails' hanging from the cloud deck and ending say a thousand feet above ground. Reminds me of that except it's so much thicker.
