NWS Mobile, AL Meteorologists to Conduct
Tornado Surveys over the Next Several Days

Tornado surveys are certain to continue for several days across portions of southeastern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama from Friday’s deadly tornadoes which ravaged the North Central Gulf Coast Region. Figures 1a and 1b below show the paths of supercell thunderstorms that produced the tornadoes (not the tornadoes themselves) and hail swaths, respectively from mid Friday Morning (15 April 2011) until just after Midnight CDT (16 April). Fig 1b depicts annotated ground truth large hail reports from citizens and officials. Some hail reports were as large as baseballs!

Figure 1a above also shows 17 parent thunderstorm circulations during the event time period, all of which were strong enough to support at least weak tornadoes. Six of them were cyclic in nature (i.e., repeatedly evolving in association with the same parent thunderstorm – denoted by open circle). Preliminarily, EF3 intensity tornado damage was found in Leakesville, MS and eastward into portions of southwest Washington County, Alabama by NWS ground survey. Figure 2 below shows all tornado, large hail and severe thunderstorm wind reports associated with the event within the NWS Mobile/Pensacola Warning Area. Figure 3 shows the massive “debris ball” on the tip of the radar reflectivity hook (leftmost image) prior to the tornado striking Leakesville, MS.

    Figure 2

Already in 2011, EF-1 or higher tornadoes have occurred within the NWS Mobile/Pensacola Warning Area which spans 20 counties across southeast Mississippi, southwest Alabama and the extreme west Florida Panhandle. If five tornadoes are confirmed in association with this event, this will tie the previous record of 11 set back in 1996 (confirmed since the installation of the WSR-88D in June 1994).
Over the next several days, NWS Meteorologists in Mobile, AL will have their work cut out for them as they gather more details. Each of the circulation paths with associated damage will be surveyed both from the air (to better assess beginning and ending damage locations) and on the ground (to best assess intensity from the degree of damage. This page will be routinely updated as details become availabl

Will give you a shout if needed. We are on our way right now up to North AL to drop of a generator and some gas for a family member in North AL who doesn't expect power to be back for another week to ten days. Looks like a once in 100 year flood event is about to happen around Memphis and the MS river so I will ask again that people please donate to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army and not to Hardcoreweather.com Thanks again :)
