Crossing Atchafalaya

So, I'm heading to Houston tomorrow and will be driving over the raging flood waters and I'm nervous! I think I'll take a life jacket, just in case my luck would have it that the bridge will wash out right at the moment I'm crossing it. Will try to take photos and post them here, but may need help.

Heading to Houston myself. Having a crawfish boil for work. I think you'll be OK over the basin.

I'd be more worried about the bridge in Lake Charles!

If you are on I-10 you will be OK. The water is high, but not at the dangerous level. Now if you want to see some high water take a detour over hwy 190. Just watch out for the wildlife. Water is much higher there, but still safe to drive over.

I will be in H-town next weekend.

I worked on clearing a log jam on a bridge over the Sabine a few years ago. The jam was the result of the deadfall from hurricane Rita, which caused a huge tree to wedge between two columns. This jammed debris and placed a tremendous strain on the support members.

Considering the amount of debris, the water depth and the velocity of the river during that event, I'd say the Atchafalaya bridge is safe, except for the rubberneckers slowing down to observe and take photos.

So, Windwatcher, keep your eye out for dumbasses and watch the road.

I made it but got caught in that I-12 2-hour delay Friday afternoon around noon. Some kind of wreck around the Amite River area. Traffic stopped dead for two hours. So a 5.5 hour trip turned into an 8 hour trip. Miserable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, the Atchafalaya: On Friday, the water looked to be about 8' below the bottom of the bridge/road. On Sunday coming back, it looked to be about 4' below. Couldn't really get good pictures at (60mph) because the proportion and scale is all off. Water everywhere, so unless you know what it usually looks like, it didn't look odd. Saw a couple of rooftops in the water. Hunting camps, I'm guessing. Now the river in Baton Rouge, view from the bridge, was impressive!
