    *An estimate for 2011 is based on the change in the CPI from third quarter 2010 to third quarter 2011.

    Here's how to use it:
    [the chart above is from http://www.minneapolisfed.org/commun...c/hist1913.cfm
    ]

    [h=2]How the CPI is used to make these calculations.[/h]
    • What would an item or service purchased in 2011 be worth in 19?? dollars?

      Example:

      The CPI is used to calculate how prices have changed over the years. Let's say you have $7 in your pocket to purchase some goods and services today. How much money would you have needed in 1950 to buy the same amount of goods and services?

      The CPI for 1950 = 24.1
      The CPI for 2011 = 226.3*
      Use the following formula to compute the calculation:
      1950 Price = 2011 Price x (1950 CPI / 2011 CPI*)
      $0.75 = $7.00 x (24.1 /226.3)
    • What would an item or service purchased in 19?? be worth in 2011 dollars?

      Example:

      Let's say your parents told you that in 1950 a movie cost 25 cents. How could you tell if movies have increased in price faster or slower than most goods and services? To convert that price into today's dollars, use the CPI.

      The CPI for 1950 = 24.1
      The CPI for 2011 = 226.3*
      A movie in 1950 = $0.25
      Use the following formula to compute the calculation:
      2011 Price = 1950 Price x (2011 CPI* / 1950 CPI)
      $2.35 = $0.25 x (226.3/24.1) A full-price movie at a Minneapolis theater costs between $6.00 and $10.00. Looks like movies have increased in price faster than most other goods and services.

    [the how to examples are at http://www.minneapolisfed.org/commun.../teacher/calc/
    ]

    Okay, look at the number in the right hand column for 1921 - it's Minus 10.9%
    That's "The Worst Twentieth Century Depression", the next worse one was the 1932 at minus 10.3%

    The worst twenty first century depression [by their calc] is 2009 at minus 0.3%

    So how much have house values dropped?

    Well I know that my tax assessor re-assessed my home last year and its valve decreased by $4000+/-. Of course she could use a new coat of paint inside and outside, gutters need to be cleaned, a few window screens need to replaced, new plumbing, new electric, new insulation... not to much for a 100+ yo house.

    Down about 15-20% in value since 2007. Better than some areas, I guess, but still has some people upside down in their mortgages.
