My heart is always warmed to read stories of neighbors and strangers helping each other out in the aftermath of these natural disasters. Too bad we can't all live like that year-round.

Hurricane Isabel also ripped two new inlets through the island in 2003, cutting NC 12 into pieces. Those were filled in by the US Army Core of Engineers and the road restored as it was. There was a study undertaken to determine what to do with the reoccurring problem with NC 12 and inlets being formed during storms. One such proposal involved the possibility of adding bridges in previous problem areas. It appears no progress was made with moving that project forward if the same thing just happened again with Irene.

You guys had the same problem after Ivan and Katrina. Especially towards the Alabama and Florida line.

I never had a chance to thank everyone who gave advice on how to prepare for Irene, It was a huge help and I passed it along to my friends and family. I never lost my power, one the few in my town. 90% of my town did so we were able to help others out with the supply of ice and lanterns that I had. RI has been declared a Disaster Area. My family was so lucky and I am so appreciative of Hardcore.com. Thank you again.

Close your hot water heater off if you think you'll lose power and might have water issues. It gives you 40 - 80 gals of fresh water from the drain, if you need it.

Have enough canned food for a week.

Stay/crash in an interior room away from trees and overhanging branches, or for you Yanks, in the basement (sorry, not an option down here) so long as it won't flood.

Move vehicles off the road (clean up crews may need to come through to move downed trees/limbs ), and park away from trees/low lying areas.

Get a mini-propane stove (like a Coleman) to heat up your canned food, and plenty of canisters (but be careful not to carbon monoxide yourself!!!!).

If you don't have storm shutters, masking tape your windows in an X fashion (and get the stuff off quickly after the wind goes away!!!!).

Don't open windows (rain blows in and its not good for tornados).

Get some battery powered lanterns and flashlights (not propane) and PLENTY of batteries.

Find an old battery powered radio that works.

Run your A/C as low as possible until power goes out (cool down and dehumidify the house, as it can get quite muggy before power comes back; also, a cool house does not feel as uncomfortable as a warm one after 3 or 4 days).

Stock up on whatever you need to keep life relatively comfortable, then get some* beer.

Stay inside.
