QuestionAboutCharley
Is Hurricane Charley the first Cat 4 storm to hit the US since Hugo? It seems that Charley's powerful winds held together quite a ways inland. Is this unusual for a hurricane to be so compact, with such highly concentrated devestating winds? Anyone have an estimate on the lowest pressure of Charley as it came ashore?

Well sir, no Hugo was not the last Category 4 storm to hit the US. If I am not mistaken Opal made landfall as a 4 and Hurricane Andrew was a 5 after extensive study by the National Hurricane Center.

Opal made landfall as a CAT 3. I remember cause I got hit by it. Smile Still did catastrophic damage to the beaches. Opal had hit 150mph at one point-so that storm surge was that of a CAT4 - almost a 5.

Oh yeah-Hurricane Bret in 1999 hit south Texas as a CAT 4. Fortunately-it hit an area that had a very low population. That was quite lucky! Had it hit Corpus Christi-things would have been ugly!
